A few years ago I met an incredibly talented photographer from Canada while at WPPI in Las Vegas. WPPI is the largest convention and trade show for photographers and it brings about 15,000 of us from around the globe. Who knew that meeting Baz Kanda of Five Rivers Studio would grow into a friendship from afar and an incredible opportunity to shoot my very first Sikh wedding. When Baz asked me to shoot Manita & Jag’s wedding with him in Pittsburgh I think I squealed first and then said “YES!!”. I booked the flight and anxiously awaited the day when I would be able to document this very big day for the bride & groom.
When I arrived in Pittsburgh Baz mentioned that he would be shooting the pre-wedding reception and I was more than welcome to come shoot some and hang out. I freshened up, grabbed my gear and headed to the reception ballroom. This was a perfect opportunity for me to meet Manita, Jag and some of their friends and family.
The next morning came early because we were to start shooting at 6:00am. I went to the suite where Jag was getting ready and I will admit, I was nervous. Being that this was my first Sikh wedding everything was new to me and it was SO important that I captured every single detail. I was an information sponge and was so thankful to get tips of things to watch out for along the way. Jag’s brother provided me with so much information on the bus ride to the Gurudwara. I took endless mental notes. When it was time for the ceremony I took off my shoes, covered my head and went inside to capture their wedding ceremony. It was such a privilege to be a part of Manita & Jag’s day and everyone was so welcoming!!
We then headed back on the bus to the reception after a short break. The dancing, the food, the music, colors, excitement…pretty much everything was a beautiful thing to experience. Thank you Baz for this opportunity! Congratulations to you Manita and Jagjit…I wish you all the happiness in your future 🙂 Be sure to check out Baz’s site and see the amazing work he does.
